Wachteliegnce – Tom Hambridge Goes “Boom”
By A.J. Wachtel
In any and all music worlds, Tom Hambridge is a force to be reckoned with. Onstage, the songs he writes and plays on propel this energy into great nights full of great performances. Offstage, Tom Hambridge is equally exciting: and his good temperament, easy manner and strong direction and focus completes the picture. Each time you catch up with him and listen to what he has to say it’s like walking through a storm with a strong wind at your back.
AJ Wachtel – How has winning the 2010 Grammy Award for producing Buddy Guy’s “Living Proof” the Best Blues Album changed your life?
Tom Hambridge – Well the phone is ringing off the hook. It’s been hard to keep up with the album offers coming in.
AJ Wachtel – Tow of The Rattlesnakes, Jimmy Scoppa and Tommy MacDonald, were also in your 80′s band Tom Hambridge and The Wreckage. That’s loyalty for you. What’s special about their talents that keep them in your band after all these years
Tom Hambridge – Musicianship and friendship. They are my Rattlesnake brothers.
AJ Wachtel – You are a great drummer but onstage for most of your set you are upfront singing. What’s behind this, don’t you miss your own powerful pounding backing you up?
Tom Hambridge – When we play big arenas and 20,000 seat sheds we find is easier for the audience to focus more if I can move around the stage as opposed to being hidden in the back behind cymbals.
AJ Wachtel – What is the best thing about having Jimmy Scoppa’s rockabilly influences mixing it up with Sal Baglio’s rock and roll sensibilities in your group? Tom Hambridge – I can play any song from my catalog or off any of my albums whether it’s blues, rock, country or rockabilly and with those two cats I’m covered.
AJ Wachtel – How are the audiences enjoying your new cd “Boom” when you perform the songs?
Tom Hambridge – The reaction to the new album has been amazing
AJ Wachtel – What’s in the future for The Rattlesnakes?
Tom Hambridge – We just finished a summer tour with Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Doobie Brothers and are gearing up for a 15 city tour opening for George Thorogood and the Destroyers. Right after that and we head out on an amazing tour opening for ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd throughout the Mid-west.
AJ Wachtel – Boom is a very autobiographical cd. What’s it like singing these songs and having audiences go wild over them?
Tom Hambridge – It’s always great to get a positive reaction to songs you know the audience has never heard before.
AJ Wachtel – Tell me a great Roy Buchanan story.
Tom Hambridge – Having Roy show up at a party at my little apartment in Allston after we did a sold-out show at Jonathan Swifts in Cambridge.
AJ Wachtel – Tell me a great Chuck Berry story.
Tom Hambridge – Too many…. don’t get me started
AJ Wachtel – Tell me your favorite session story.
Tom Hambridge – Sitting between B.B. King & Buddy Guy in a studio in Las Vegas producing their first ever duet of my song “Stay Around A Little Longer”
AJ Wachtel – Tell me your favorite touring story.
Tom Hambridge – So many. Sitting on a tour bus with Buddy Guy while he tells you his touring stories!
AJ Wachtel – You’ve worked with Buddy Guy, Lynyrd Skynyrd George Thorogood, Billy Ray Cyrus, B.B. King and Johnny Winter. Do any of these Southern artists make fun of your Boston roots?
Tom Hambridge – No never they usually tell me about all the great times they’ve all had in Beantown!
AJ Wachtel – Any advice to young artist’s trying to get their music heard ?
Tom Hambridge – Play your original songs at your shows.
